Building Your Own Garden Shed
If you have quite a green thumb, but are frustrated at the clutter that follows a garden tending exercise, then maybe its time to consider building a garden shed. Garden sheds are easy to build provided you have a few basic DIY skills and the right building supplies.
They come with a plethora of benefits also. They allow better organization of your tools and better utilization of your garage space. You will no longer have tools, bags of soil and other clutter spoiling the aesthetics. And the best part is that you will have all the tools at arm’s length whenever you need access to it.
Here’s our small 6 step guide that will help you build the shed from start to finish.
Chalk out a plan
You need to have a detailed plan in place before you go shopping for building supplies. The first thing to decide would be the shape and the size of the shed. For some inspiration, you can look at garden sheds in the neighborhood, browse online for designs and also visit local building supply stores like Home Depot. Once you get an idea of the various design options, think about what would look good in your backyard. You want something that can accommodate all the garden tools you frequently use. But you do not want to build something that’s beyond your budget.
Once you have zeroed down on a design, create a rough estimate of the cost. This will help you immensely once you start with the building process. What are the materials that you’d need? What quantity do you need to buy? What is the average cost for each type of building supply? How much do you need to pay upfront? Would there be labour costs or will you be building it yourself from start to finish?
Look up on the internet and in the newspapers if any building supply outlets have discounted deals. You can also plan building your garden shed in advance to take advantage of annual close out deals.
Shopping for supplies
Once you have zeroed down on a design that captures your interest, its time to go shopping. You can choose to buy premade shed kits made of wood or vinyl. These kits also include detailed building plans. If you plan to go custom, however, then your building materials supplier can help you with brochures that include ‘How to’ details. The materials that are typically needed include lumber, steel, sheeting, vinyl, nails and other hardware.
Your shed will be built on a foundation or a platform. Depending on the prevalent weather conditions, the contour of the land on which it will be built and the drainage, you can choose from concrete, cement blocks or treated lumber as the material for the foundation.
Build as per the plan
If this is your first DIY project, then do not hesitate to seek professional help when needed. If you are a seasoned DIY weekend warrior, then have fun building the shed as per the plan. With the right building supplies and the tools, it should be a fairly easy process.
And when you are done, sit back and enjoy the perks of a better organized garden space.
